Imagine a road with signals and exits that is 5 km long. If there are only 50 cars on the road, it’s easy to manage. However, if there are 5000 vehicles on the same road, potholes and overflowing water will come onto the road, resulting in congestion, delays, waste of resources, unhappy drivers, and accidents.
The same principle applies to project management. When there are too many moving parts and teams decide to hustle independently, miscommunication and delays occur. The cost of multiple sources of information is far higher than that of one source of truth.
Project management requires a balance between agility and process-oriented approaches. It’s important to deal with concerns while looking at the bigger picture to eliminate them. Sometimes, you may have to align with other teams to reduce efforts, even if it requires some effort.
As a project manager, it’s important to find a balance between being too process-oriented and constantly hustling. Your team will only trust you if you change appropriately and share the vision with them. Pave the path and be willing to adapt to the situation.
Remember, if it aligns with the larger goal and will benefit the organization, keep going. Humble narcissism comes into play.
